The world of guest accommodation is changing because a new generation of guests want something more. Some of the change is taking place within hotels, but increasingly it’s also emerging from new accommodation models beyond hotels. Everywhere, disruption is the new norm.
Alternative Accommodation World has been created as a pre-event to HotelsWorld 2017 to discuss the why, what and where in the burgeoning world of guest accommodation beyond hotels. It’s a world that not only includes apartments and private/homestay accommodation, but also a diverse range of other options including hostels/poshtels, glamping, holiday parks, timeshare, student accommodation and more. And it’s a world that no-one can ignore – in the USA alternative accommodation has been estimated to account for 20% of the total accommodation market, whilst serviced apartments alone in Australia account for a quarter of total room supply.
Serviced apartments are a proven model but other recent options are still works in progress, which raises the question of whether they will survive. Do they have a sustainable demand base, or are they are mere fads destined to fade as their novelty wanes? And will they be able to achieve sufficient returns to be bankable? The jury is out.
Meanwhile hoteliers face the more immediate question of whether alternative accommodation options pose a material threat to the hotel sector. How will guests assess the comparative product and value propositions? Or are value comparisons meaningless when product types are so divergent? And what types of guests are attracted to alternative accommodation offerings and how should hoteliers respond (if at all)?
Industry leaders from both the alternative accommodation and hotel sectors, together with other industry experts, will address these questions and more at Alternative Accommodation World on the morning of 25 July 2017.
Alternative Accommodation World is part of HotelsWorld 2017, a suite of four consecutive industry events in three days to be held in Sydney from 25 to 27 July 2017. With more than 500 CEO’s and other industry leaders expected in the audience, and more than 120 eminent global and local speakers on the stage, HotelsWorld 2017 will be the main event on the conference calendar for CEO’s and other senior executives involved in the management, development, ownership and financing of the Australia and New Zealand accommodation industry.
